PREVENTION RESOURCES

Tip of the Week

A Call to Action: Men's Groups

In 2003 at a prior institution of mine, a group of staff, faculty and students started a weekly group to discuss issues related to men. Specifically, we wanted to explore what it meant to be a gentleman in modern times. Was the term hopelessly outdated? Could it be seen as openly sexist given how far feminism had evolved? What did it mean to be a “good” guy on campus? How do you balance strength with vulnerability? How can men express their views and be understood in a way that respects other groups on campus?

Click here to learn more about the ways in which masculinity is being discussed on other campuses and how men's groups can facilitate that dialogue.

Spotlight

Sticks and Stones, A Resource Guide for Educators

Emily Bazelon, a major contributor and leading authority on the shifting landscape of bullying, is the author of Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy. It has been hailed in the New York Times as an "authoritative and important book [that] should not only be read by educators and parents alike, but should also be taught in law schools and journalism schools." From her research and reporting, Bazelon compiled a resource guide for educators. The list includes movies and videos, books, organizations and programs and a Q&A with Bazelon.
