SCOPE Co-Sponsors Campus SaVE Act Rapid Response Webinar

After years of legislative wrangling, Congress reauthorized a robust, expanded and much strengthened version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in late February. Included in the VAWA Reauthorization legislation is the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (Campus SaVE Act), whose Section 304 substantially amends the Higher Education Act of 1965 to impose SEVENTY (70) new provisions, disclosures and procedural protections. Is your campus ready? Join SCOPE and its partnering organizations, ATIXA & The NCHERM Group, LLC, on April 2nd, 2013 from 1:00-3:00pm EST for Getting to Know the Campus SaVE Act – A Webinar on the VAWA Reauthorization. All SCOPE members receive a 15% discounted registration rate. Click here to learn more.

SCOPE Tip of the Week

Beware the Bully

One of the struggles students experience is with peers who bully, tease or harass. Many school shooting scenarios in the recent past have involved students who were bullied by fellow students. The issues of bullying are often complicated, traumatic and overwhelming to manage on top of the other adjustments that a young person has to make.

Types of Bullies (with help from WiredSafety.org)

  • Inadvertent: Students who engage in this kind of bullying don’t set out to bully others. They are often caught up in a social situation or may be fulfilling some role they feel they “have” to play. These bullies don’t always realize the impact of their behavior. An example may be hazing as part of a sports team or a group of students teasing someone in their hall about his or her clothes.

For more on understanding bullying, please view our full Tip of the Week here.
